Lucerne (Luzern) tourist information & hotel reservations.
We warmly welcome you to visit Luzern and wish you a wonderful vacation.
Lucerne is a popular tourist destination located 50 kilometers south of Zurich and 90 kilometers east of Berne. It represents the history of Switzerland with its cobblestone streets, slim spires, fountains and beautifully decorated houses. It is also very close to nature – at the end of a lake and one can see the Alps, Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus in the distance.
From historical point of view, Lucerne is popular with the St. Gotthard Pass – a simple unpaved road in the 13th century which became a very used trading route in the 19th century. In 1332 Lucerne became the first town which became part of the Swiss Confederation. Unlike many others, the town was against the Reformation and remained Catholic despite all.
Later the town became a popular cultural centre which even attracted the attention of Richard Wagner who lived in Tribschen, in Lucerne’s outskirts. There was founded the Lucerne International Festival of Music by Arturo Toscanini, which is an annual (Aug – Sept) and very important event in Europe.
You can also practice many sports in Lucerne – from swimming and rowing in Rotsee, to golfing in the outskirts. The people who live there are also keen on horse riding and you can visit many international competitions.
You should definitely visit Lucerne on Tuesday or Saturday – these are the market days with stands near the Reuss River banks.
