Murren

Murren has a great location - high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, situated on 11 kilometers South of Lauterbrunnen and 30 km South of Interlaken. At 1624 meters Mürren is the highest year-round resort village in the Bernese Oberland. It's a nice side-trip from Interlaken during the summer and a major ski resort in the winter.

Murren Skiing Holidays

There are lots of downhill slopes in the village area and actually Murren is also the birthplace of the modern alpine racing. Murren, which is considered for one of the finest winter sport resorts of Switzerland, provides access to the Schilthorn (2923 meters) - the start of a fifteen kilometers slope that drops all the way to Lauterbrunnen. The resort facilities also feature a funicular railway, 7 lifts and 2 cable cars. For cross-country skiers, Mürren offers twelve kilometers track in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, which is on ten minutes by railway from Murren.
The alpine Sports Center (Sportzentrum), in the heart of Mürren village  is one of the best in the Bernese Oberland. The contemporary edifice has a tourist information office, an indoor pool, a lounge, a snack bar, an excellent outdoor skating rink, and a playroom for the kids; also facilities for tennis, curling and squash. The Sports Center is usually open Monday to Friday from 9 am to noon and 1 to 6:45 pm, but from Christmas to April and July to September also on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, but one should check locally as these times can vary.
The popular Mürren-Allmendhubel Cableway leaves from the northwestern edge of the resort. There’s a great panoramic view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley as far as Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. A stroll in this nice hilly region might be a highlight of one’s excursion to Switzerland, where from mid-June to late August the alpine meadows are covered with beautiful wildflowers. The cable car is open daily throughout the year from 8 am to 5 pm, but there are annual closings for maintenance during May and November.

Maybe the most famous trip from Mürren is a cable-car ride to the Schilthorn, which is very popular for its 360-degree view. The panorama extends from the Jura to the Black Forest, including Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger. The Schilthorn is also called “Piz Gloria” after the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (some of the most dramatic scenes were filmed here). The summit is also the beginning point of the world’s longest downhill ski race. The cable car to Schilthorn leaves on every half hour and the journey to the top takes around twenty minutes.
