Thun is situated on the spot where the River Aare flows out of the Lake Thun (Thunersee). The town is 19 kilometers south of Berne and many tourists overlook it. The truth is that Thun is a very picturesque place with a magnificent castle and old fashioned centre. The town is surrounded by many mountains and peaks, including Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Niesen (2 362 meters) and Stockhorn (2 190 meters). They offer a really amazing landscape worth seeing.

Thun Tourist Attractions, Activities and Holidays

You should not miss seeing the Old Town, located on the one bank of the river. It was tragically flooded in 1999, but is now fully renovated. There you can visit the main street – Obere Hauptgasse. Another place of interest is the Rathausplatz where is the Town Hall, built in the 16th century. From all over this part of the town you can reach the castle. It is like out of a fairy-tale, above the rest of the town. It was built in 1190 and now houses a historical museum, open daily throughout the whole year. In the museum you can see exhibitions of typical furniture for the area as well as weapons and armor from medieval times.
On the bank of the lake, on the side of the station, you can go to the Schadau Park. There you can admire beautiful flowers, breathtaking views of the mountains in the area and the Castle of Schadau – a lavish edifice from the 19th century, almost touching the water. Near it there is the cylindrical building of the Wocher Panorama, freely open every day except for Monday. In it there is a huge painting running in circle on the interior wall. It is the oldest one in the world and represents the daily life of Thun from the beginning of the 19th century.
